Hail damage repair becomes essential following a severe North Georgia storm. Roofing materials abused by hailstones must be replaced to head off rain and wind damage. It can occur in a summer thunderstorm or freak winter weather. The “scars” on battered roofs are unsightly and mar the beauty of your home. Often, the damage from heavy ice pellets is below the surface.

Hailstones can be quite large; “golf-ball sized” is not a cliché. Hail slams asphalt shingles so hard, granules are knocked loose. This immediately reduces the life of your roof; lost granules deteriorate the water resistance of your roof.

How do you know you need hail damage repair?
  • If you were home during the storm, and remember the direction the storm blew, that’s the side of your roof to look at first. You can do this from the ground with binoculars. Don’t go on the roof, but you can look from the top of a ladder.
  • Look for irregularly-shaped areas on the surface that look “scoured”; the granules have been roughed off of the shingle. Look for scars, or bald spots, at which you can see the substrate – the “inside” of the shingle. It will be darker than the rest of the roof.
  • When our inspector arrives at your home, he is also going to have a look for “grit” in your gutters. If they are full of granules, it is an indication of significant scouring beyond what the bald spots alone indicate.
  • With hail damage repair, you eliminate bald spots that age more quickly that the surrounding roof, reduce its useful life and open the door to water damage.
  • The damage will vary with the slope of your roof and the direction it faces.

What if it hailed heavily but you can’t see any damage?

Schedule our inspector, and call your insurance company anyway. Insurers know all too well that ignoring hail harm virtually guarantees future damage. It is not unusual for an insurance adjuster to determine that even if there was no visible damage, the internal structure and roofing material integrity had been compromised, and a replacement roof was necessary.

The importance of a local roofing contractor after a hail storm

Our experience in the Atlanta area allows us to offer assessments to homeowners and insurers that are taken seriously. Based on the amount of hail damage repair we’ve done through the years, we can expertly determine if the roof needs immediate replacement. Since our inspectors know the impact of the local weather on hail-damaged roofs, you will get a trustworthy recommendation for what to do next.

In addition, many insurers have dealt with us in the past and accept our determination that damage is a result of hail, and not the aftermath of aging or previous damage. (Without this determination, your insurance company may refuse to cover your hail damage repair.) You will always be provided supporting evidence of our conclusions.

The only honest answer you should receive when you ask a roofing contractor, “Should I replace my hail-damaged roof?” is, “I don’t know until I see it.” You will get calls, and quotes from unscrupulous people. You want to do business with a home grown business such as ours, who will be here after the repair and will always inspect the damage before offering a solution.

A couple of “don’ts”
  1. Don’t forget to have the garage and sheds inspected for hail damage repair
  2. Don’t let anyone sell you a “hail-proof” new roof. New materials are certainly hail-resistant. But hail is a natural scourge on roofs.
